Aquamarine is a popular blue gemstone and a birthstone for the month of March. Its name comes from the Latin word for seawater, and ancient mariners claimed the gem would calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea.
A member of the beryl family, Aquamarine ranges in colour from a faint light blue to blue and bluish-green, with lighter coloured stones being the more common type. Readily available and moderately priced, Aquamarine makes an excellent jewellery stone that is durable enough to withstand daily wear, and has even become a popular alternative to a diamond for engagement rings.
Unlike its Emerald cousin which is quite often heavily included or flawed, making them look ‘cloudy’, Aquamarine is commonly more ‘clean’ by comparison and therefore has higher clarity.
When shopping for aquamarines, look for those with good clarity and no cracks or fissures; to ensure you get a quality stone.
